Growing functional materials at low temperatures via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition for energy, sensing, and wearable technologies

Primary PI: Necmi Biyikli

We are studying the synthesis of electronic materials with atomic-scale control and precision using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Among the materials we are interested in are wide bandgap nitride and oxide semiconductors, high-k dielectrics, phase-change compounds, noble metal films and nanoparticles, etc. We aim to use these nanoscale materials in various device applications in the broader fields of clean energy, flexible/wearable technology, and microelectronics.

Electronic phase-change memory

Primary PI: Ali Gokirmak

Phase change memory has entered the electronic memory market as Intel Optane in the recent years. This new technology works on the principle of melting a small volume of a glassy material to switch between the highly resistive amorphous state and the conductive crystalline state. In our laboratory, we perform experiments and computational studies related to this device technology and try to understand the physical phenomena that take place in these nanoscale electronic devices. REU students contribute to the experiments or the computational analysis, depending on their interests.

Cyber System Engineering Modeling

Primary PI: Krishna Pattipatti

My lab intends to host two students with competencies in programming and engineering modeling. These competencies may be fulfilled through relevant coursework and experience in a research lab or industry position. These competencies are necessary to contribute to the research towards developing MATLAB/Simulink, TEAMS (see Qualtech), and/or SysML models for space habitat systems. This research requires translating requirements into code, meeting with domain experts, and working closely with other researchers to deliver code and reports. Successful applicants stand to gain exposure to world-class systems modelers, and methods. It is required to be a US citizen to participate in this research.
